The term Lasik in Lasik Eye Surgery, a type of refractive eye surgical procedure, stands for “laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis,” Eye diseases such as myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia are cured by executing this surgical procedure. This procedure reshapes the cornea or the transparent covering of the eye by treating the corneal flap with laser technology. The eyesight of the patient is enhanced thus reducing the use of glasses or contact lenses by employing the use of a highly specialized laser. Refractive errors are also cured using Lasik eye medication. Despite the use of expensive equipment, lasik surgery cost is quite reasonable.

Lasik Eye Surgery is employed in order to treat various eye illnesses such as myopia or nearsightedness, hyperopia or farsightedness and astigmatism. In myopia, the imbalance in eye length and focusing power that cause near objects to become clearer than distant objects are cured. The difference between the concentrating power and the eye extent that causes far-away objects to become clearer than nearer objects are healed in hyperopia treatment. In astigmatism, the distorted cornea causing multiple images on the patient’s retina is remedied. Lasik Eye Surgery is made up of three stages. A thin hinged corneal flap is made by the eye surgeon with the use of lasers. The patient’s eye is then detained in its place by means of a corneal suction ring. The flap is then created by using a specific type of laser called “femtosecond laser microkeratome”. A series of closely arranged bubbles are then created within the patient’s cornea. The stroma or the middle part of the cornea is then exposed by folding the flap backwards.

The laser is then utilized in order to remodel the patient’s cornea in a different manner as the second stage. The laser used in this stage is called the “excimer laser”. This laser vaporizes the eye tissues in a delicate manner without harming the stroma near it. Tens of micrometers of tissue are detached without any actual burning or cutting involved. Continuous incidents of unclear vision and disorientation may be encountered by the patient during this stage.

After the reshaping, the corneal flap is then replaced onto the cornea, without any need for stitches. The eye surgeon carefully replaces the flap over the treated area of the cornea. Air bubbles and other debris that may have paved its way unto the eye are verified and removed by the eye specialist. Natural healing will eventually ensue after the flap connects itself to the cornea. This usually takes about a few weeks to a couple of months.

There are several things the patient must do after lasik eye surgery. After the surgery, the patient is given a number of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops for the first few weeks. The patient is required to moisturize the eyes with preservative-free tears and prescription drops. Much sleep is also required of the patient in order to hasten the recovery period. Dark-shaded sunglasses are also a must in order to protect the eyes from bright lights. Protective goggles are also required to prevent the rubbing of the eyes which may deal damage to the eyes when sleeping.
